I have a 14 year old boy and twin 5 year old girls. We read the "Mr. Putter and Tabby" series (Cynthia Rylant) and Poppleton (also by C. Rylant). We love the McDuff book series (Rosemary Wells/Susan Jeffers) about a little westie dog set in the 1930s. "McDuff Comes Home" is the first. We also read my childhood favorites: "Mrs. Goose of Animaltown" by Miriam Clark Potter. Alas, her books (from the 1950s) are out of print, but are wonderful for their innocent story lines from a bygone era.

My son also 7 and my daughter and my daughter is 3 and they both get the giggles when I read Too Many Daves by Dr. Suess. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is also a good one that they both like.

Martinorth | September 21, 2008

My son is also 7 and I am not sure I would recommend these books to all 7 years old because they can be kind of scary, but my son loves the American Chillers/Michigan Chiller series books.

SuzieCue | September 19, 2008

My 7 year old loves the A to Z mysteries series, Encyclopedia Brown series, Moongobble & Me series, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Kingdom Keepers, and Kingdom Keepers 2.

My 3 (almost 4) year old loves Dr. Suess and anything disney princess (there is a lot of disney princess for all reading levels at Barnes & Nobel or Borders).

Brown Bear, Brown Bear (& other Eric Carlyle) are always a favorite at any age. If you can still find it Greg & Steve have a CD called Playing Favorites that put Brown Bear, Brown Bear to a song. Also Peter, Paul & Mary's CD, "Peter, Paul, & Mommy" has the Boa Constrictor poem (mentioned below) as a song which is one of my kids' favorites, they ask for it all the time, even my 9 year old still loves it.

Okay. I have to absolutely vote for skippy jon jones. I read this book to my daughter's class and they were rolling with laughter. Great fun and I recommend it to all parents!

joeB | September 16, 2008

My son is 4 and my daughter is 2, they both crack up at the Skippy Jon Jones books, especially Skippy Jon Jones and the Big Bones, which comes with a CD of the story read by the author, Judy Shachner. Pinkalicious is a fun one for the girls, too. And Ladybug Girl. My son really likes the Virginia Lee Burton books, too, but that may be a little young for your son. My daughter really likes them, though and the illustrations are beautiful. The kissing hand has become a favorite now that school has started.

mrswendyd | September 15, 2008

If you want books that you can use as shared reading time with your son... try Shel Silverstein books. I love The Giving Tree. Also, take him to get his very own library card if you haven't already done so. Most public libraries have family story hour...great ideas for new books.

I really like Mercer Meyer books with Little Critter. Each story is relevant to issues children face like "Just a Little Different", "I Had a Bad Dream", etc. There are tons of them. My daughter is just under 3 and really likes these books.

I've got two that should work well for both of them. My favorite picture book ever is called "Andrey Henry's Meadow" by Doris Burn. My three year old daughter loves it and I remember reading it with my dad even as a third grader. It's the story of a boy who loves to build things and drives his family crazy with his inventions. He leaves home and builds his own house in a beautiful meadow, other misunderstood children join him and he builds each of them a home that fits their peculiar needs. Of course there is a reunion and a happy ending.

I am also a children's author and my book "Our Walk in the Woods" is recommended for kids 3-9 years old. It is the story of a girl and her dog and their Saturday morning walk. The story is told from each of their very different perspectives. You can see pictures from the book and hear an audio version at ourwalkinthewoods.com.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Joffe Numeroff and Felicia Bond

LeslieTang | July 3, 2008

I have an almost 7 year old daughter, and she really enjoys Harry Potter. We've only read the first one to her, but she loved it.

And for your 3 year old...there is an amazing pop-up version of Alice and Wonderland that is just beautiful.

annieandjakesmom | July 3, 2008

Cheesy...but when your kids get to be about four or five the lightly chapterized versions of peter pan are always fun to read. There's something about that story, even when not illustration heavy, that hooks the kids in and you can see their imaginations buzzing as they listen.

joeB | July 3, 2008

Old Classics: Green eggs and Ham, Where the wild things are, goodnight moon.

Jeff | July 3, 2008

I have a few favorites...Any compilation of "Frog and Toad" stories serve as good, modern fables, "Goodnight Gorilla" is a fun, image driven book and "Snappy Little Numbers" is an amazing pop-up.

joeB | July 2, 2008

I have a 3 year old daughter and a one year old daughter. They love the book "Barnyard Dance" by Sandra Boynton. It is vedry fun book that we love to play out the words. It is great entertainment.

I love anything by Todd Parr.

SamiH | June 30, 2008

We are a book crazy family, for younger book worms (like your 3yr old daughter) I love:Dinosaur Roar (it comes in both board book and hardback/paperback formats)

http://www.amazon.com/Dinosaur-Roar-Picture-Puffins-Stickland/dp/0140568085/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214779626&sr=8-1

Doggies (Sandra Boynton)

B is for Books (Sesame Street - Elmo)

Gallop is a relatively new book but it's become a quick hit with every child I've seen pick it up (heck adults love it too)

http://www.amazon.com/Gallop-Scanimation-Rufus-Butler-Seder/dp/0761147632/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214780036&sr=1-1

the Skippyjon Jones books are phenomenal

http://judithbyronschachner.com/skippyjon_jones.html

Wildest Brother by Cornelia Funke is cute and she has several others that have brilliantly written heroines

http://www.amazon.com/Wildest-Brother-Cornelia-Funke/dp/0439828627/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&;s=books&qid=1214780575&sr=1-22

and for your son...the Cpt. Underpants series are a little gross at times but such fun for the age group.

http://www.scholastic.com/captainunderpants/

also by the same author (Dav Pilkey) the Ricky Ricotta series is great:

http://www.scholastic.com/titles/rickyricotta/

I enjoy Bruce Coville's work and for this age there are a number of great books... one series; Moongobble and Me is fun 3-book set that has a lot of adventure and magic packed into a neat little package.

http://www.brucecoville.com/books.asp?gid=13

Cornelia Funke also has a trilogy (Inkheart, Inkspell, Inkdeath) that he might enjoy... they are longer books and are recommended for ages 9-12, but it would just depend on your son kwim?

http://www.amazon.com/Inkheart-Cornelia-Funke/dp/0439709105/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214780687&sr=1-1

Also by Ms. Funke is a cute Christmas story; When Santa Fell To Earth

http://www.amazon.com/When-Santa-Earth-Cornelia-Funke/dp/043978204X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214780784&sr=1-1

and one last suggestion ... The Spiderwick Chronicles are GREAT!

http://www.amazon.com/Spiderwick-Chronicles-Boxed-Set-Lucindas/dp/0689040342/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214780829&sr=1-1

For your three year old, I would say:

How do Dinosaurs say goodnight?

josiegirl | June 26, 2008

Shel Silverstein was my favorite author growing up. "Where the sidewalk ends" is awesome. It's full of short stories and poems like this one:

Oh, I'm being eaten

By a boa constrictor,

A boa constrictor,

A boa constrictor,

I'm being eaten by a boa constrictor,

And I don't like it--one bit.

Well, what do you know? It's nibblin' my toe.

Oh, gee,It's up to my knee.

Oh my,It's up to my thigh.

Oh, fiddle,It's up to my middle.

Oh, heck,It's up to my neck.

Oh, dread,It's upmmmmmmmmmmffffffffff . . .
