4 month old trying cereal for the first time?

So we have been trying rice cereal once a day for about 4 days now, and everytime, he might take some, but then of course spit it out or start to cry. I would do this with him for a little bit til he at leasts get a full teaspoon full down. How do I know if this is working or not? How long do we keep doing this before I try a different cereal?

I agrree with the first reply. I do believe your little person may not be ready. Every person develops differently and some children have not developed that tongue reflex skill to eat solids. I realize there are recommendations for when to start solids but, not everyone has to fit in to that recommended guideline. The first eating experience should not be frustrating and not forced. I equate it to when a young bird learns to fly on their own. They fly by instinct and when they are ready. I have found with my three children they have reached those milestones differently from each other and my friend's children. No one really fits into a particular mold. Also, your child will give you cues when they are ready. If you can not catch on to the cues then, just try again until it is not a frustrating process for either you or your child. Besides, your child has the rest of their life to eat solid foods and waiting a few months should not be the isssue.

Maybe your little one is not ready? They recommend starting solids between 4-6 months. I know with our first, we started on her 4 month birthday, and most of it was spit out, but no crying. Our second we waited until she was 6 months old, and things went much more smoothly. rice cereal is pretty benign, so I would think it is not a cereal issue. But I am no expert :)
